Stories

Categories

Organize your real estate blog with strategic categories for better SEO and reader navigation. Learn to create category structures for market updates, buyer guides, seller tips, neighborhood content, and more.

Overview

Categories help organize your blog stories into logical groups, making it easier for readers to find related content and improving your site's SEO. Think of categories as the main sections or topics of your blog.

Benefits of Categories:

  • Better content organization
  • Improved reader navigation
  • Enhanced SEO (category pages rank in search)
  • Professional blog structure
  • Filter and sort stories easily
  • Dedicated category archive pages

Keep It Simple: Most successful real estate blogs use 5-10 categories. Too many categories confuse readers and dilute your content. Quality over quantity.

Accessing Categories

  1. Navigate to Stories from main menu
  2. Click Categories button (top right)
  3. Categories management panel opens

Or from Story Editor:

  • When creating/editing a story
  • Category dropdown in sidebar
  • Click "Manage Categories" link

Category Strategy

Planning Your Categories

Before Creating Categories:

  1. List Content Topics: What will you write about?

    • Audit existing content
    • Plan future content
    • Group similar topics
  2. Identify Main Themes: What are your 5-7 core topics?

    • Broad enough to include multiple posts
    • Specific enough to be meaningful
    • Aligned with reader interests
  3. Avoid Overlap: Each story should fit clearly in one category

    • No ambiguous categories
    • Distinct boundaries
    • Clear definitions
  4. Think Long-Term: Will this category have ongoing content?

    • Don't create category for one post
    • Plan for 5+ stories per category
    • Consider sustainability

Naming Best Practices

Good Category Names:

  • "Market Updates" (clear, searchable)
  • "Buyer Guides" (benefit-focused)
  • "Miami Neighborhoods" (location-specific)
  • "Investment Properties" (specific niche)

Poor Category Names:

  • "Miscellaneous" (too vague)
  • "Stuff" (unprofessional)
  • "Random Thoughts" (unclear value)
  • "2024" (date-based, unsustainable)

Guidelines:

  • Use title case (First Letter Capitalized)
  • Be specific but not too narrow
  • Include location if relevant
  • Use keywords people search for
  • Professional and clear

Using Categories

Assigning Categories to Stories

When Creating a Story:

  1. In story editor
  2. Find "Category" dropdown (right sidebar)
  3. Select appropriate category
  4. Can assign multiple if needed (not recommended)
  5. Save/publish story

Editing Existing Story:

  1. Open story in editor
  2. Change category dropdown
  3. Update story
  4. Category changes immediately

Bulk Category Assignment:

  1. Stories dashboard
  2. Select multiple stories (checkboxes)
  3. Bulk Actions → Change Category
  4. Select new category
  5. Apply changes

Category Best Practices

One Primary Category:

  • Assign stories to ONE main category
  • Multiple categories create confusion
  • Dilutes category strength
  • Harder to navigate

Consistent Assignment:

  • Use same criteria for categorization
  • Don't randomly assign
  • Follow your category definitions
  • Review periodically for consistency

Balance Categories:

  • Aim for similar content volume across categories
  • Don't have one category with 50 posts and another with 2
  • If imbalanced, consider merging or splitting categories

Category Pages

Each category gets its own archive page automatically.

Category Page URL

Format: yoursite.com/blog/category/[category-slug]

Examples:

  • yoursite.com/blog/category/market-updates
  • yoursite.com/blog/category/buyer-guides
  • yoursite.com/blog/category/miami-neighborhoods

Category Page Content

Automatically Includes:

  • Category name and description
  • All stories in that category
  • Sorted by publish date (newest first)
  • Pagination if many stories
  • Sidebar with other categories

SEO Value:

  • Category pages rank in Google
  • Great for broad topic keywords
  • Example: "Miami buyer tips" → Buyer Guides category page
  • Internal linking hub for related content

Customizing Category Pages

Category Description:

  • Appears at top of category page
  • Great place for SEO content
  • Explain what readers will find
  • Include relevant keywords

Example Description:

Stay informed about the Miami real estate market with monthly updates,
trend analysis, and expert insights. Our market reports cover pricing
trends, inventory levels, and forecasts to help you make smart buying
and selling decisions.

Featured Image (optional):

  • Upload image for category
  • Appears on category archive page
  • Visual identity for category

Managing Categories

Editing Categories

  1. Go to Categories management
  2. Find category to edit
  3. Click Edit icon
  4. Modify details
  5. Save changes

What You Can Edit:

  • Name (updates everywhere)
  • Slug (careful: changes URL)
  • Description
  • Color
  • Icon
  • Parent category
  • Visibility

Changing Slugs: If you change a category slug after publishing stories, the category URL changes. Set up a redirect or keep original slug to avoid broken links.

Deleting Categories

Before Deleting:

  • Consider merging with another category instead
  • Reassign stories to different category
  • Or stories become "Uncategorized"

To Delete:

  1. Categories management
  2. Find category
  3. Click Delete icon
  4. Confirm deletion
  5. Choose what to do with stories:
    • Move to another category
    • Make uncategorized
    • Delete stories (not recommended)

Can't Be Undone: Deleted categories can't be recovered

Merging Categories

If you have overlapping categories, merge them:

Choose Categories to Merge

Decide which category to keep (target) and which to eliminate (source)

Move Stories

  1. Filter stories by source category
  2. Select all stories
  3. Bulk change category to target category
  4. Verify all moved

Delete Source Category

Once empty, delete the unused category

Update Navigation

If category was in menus, remove/replace

Reordering Categories

Control how categories appear in menus:

  1. Categories management
  2. Drag-and-drop to reorder
  3. Changes apply to:
    • Category menus
    • Story filter dropdowns
    • Category widgets
  4. Save order

Recommended Order:

  • Put most popular categories first
  • Group related categories together
  • Core categories at top
  • Specialty categories below

Category Navigation

Category Menu

Display categories on your website:

Locations:

  • Blog homepage sidebar
  • Header navigation
  • Footer links
  • Widget areas

Display Options:

  • List view (all categories)
  • Dropdown menu
  • Tag cloud (sized by post count)
  • Icon grid

Category Widgets

Add category navigation anywhere:

Category List Widget:

  • Shows all categories
  • Post count per category
  • Links to category pages
  • Optional hierarchy display

Popular Categories:

  • Top X categories by post count
  • Great for sidebar
  • Highlights active topics

Categories vs Tags

Understanding the difference:

Categories

Purpose: Main content sections Number: Few (5-10) Hierarchy: Can have parent/child Required: Every post should have one Example: "Market Updates", "Buyer Guides"

Tags

Purpose: Specific keywords/topics Number: Many (unlimited) Hierarchy: Flat, no hierarchy Required: Optional Example: "luxury condos", "coral gables", "first-time buyers"

Use Both:

  • Category: "Neighborhood Guides"
  • Tags: "coral gables", "walkable", "top schools"

This gives you broad organization (category) plus specific filtering (tags).

SEO Optimization

Category SEO Value

Why Categories Matter for SEO:

  1. Topic Clustering: Groups related content

    • Signals topical authority to Google
    • "This site is an expert on Miami buyer tips"
  2. Keyword Targeting: Category pages rank

    • Target: "[Your Market] buyer guides"
    • Category page becomes ranking page
  3. Internal Linking: Natural link structure

    • Stories link to category page
    • Category page links to all stories
    • Strengthens site architecture
  4. User Experience: Easy navigation

    • Readers find related content
    • Lower bounce rate
    • More pages per session

Category Name Keywords

Include SEO keywords in category names:

Good for SEO:

  • "Miami Real Estate Market Updates" (includes location + keyword)
  • "First-Time Home Buyer Tips" (matches search query)
  • "Coral Gables Neighborhood Guide" (location-specific)

Okay for SEO:

  • "Market Updates" (keyword, but generic)
  • "Buyer Tips" (keyword)
  • "Neighborhoods" (too broad)

Poor for SEO:

  • "Updates" (too vague)
  • "Tips & Tricks" (overused, no keywords)
  • "My Thoughts" (not searchable)

Category Description SEO

Write keyword-rich descriptions:

Include:

  • Primary keyword (2-3 times naturally)
  • Related keywords
  • Location terms
  • Value proposition
  • 100-150 words

Example:

updates and analysis. Each month, we break down the latest trends in Miami
home prices, inventory levels, and market conditions affecting buyers and
sellers. Whether you're considering buying or selling in Miami-Dade County,

you need from experienced Miami real estate professionals.
